Addition: The Make Tens Strategy

a Spotlight post Understanding how numbers can be adjusted while keeping the sum the same helps students develop flexible strategies for addition. In this video, we demonstrate the Make Tens strategy using addition problems with two-digit and three-digit whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. By adjusting both addends in the problem, taking from one and giving to the other, students can transform a more complex addition problem into one that is easier to solve mentally.
