Addition: A Range of Strategies for Solving 79 + 48
By Cindy Aossey (KCM) & Funda Gonulates (NKU
Students begin to build an understanding of addition strategies through a number talk that promotes flexibility
and fluency with numbers. In this video, we walk through a problem such as 79 + 48, which encourages students
to use and connect a range of strategies, including counting on in chunks, using benchmark numbers, making tens,
partial sums, and compensation. We also show how a teacher might record students’ thinking on a number line
and with symbolic notation to make each step explicit. Through these examples, students learn to recognize
and use the structure of numbers, understand how to rebundle tens into hundreds, and build a foundation for
efficient and flexible mental computation strategies.
