Addition within 100: Make Tens Strategy
By Cindy Aossey (KCM) & Funda Gonulates (NKU)
Anchoring to benchmarks of ten is a key component of developing fluency with addition and
subtraction
within 100. In this video we demonstrate the Make Tens strategy for addition, starting with
one-digit
addends and extending into two-digit addends. The strategy is modeled using a variety of
materials,
including ten frames with counters, 2-row Rekenreks, ten-frame cards, unifix cube towers, and
bundles
and sticks, all of which can help students make tens concretely.
The video also models connecting the hands-on work to verbal explanations and symbolic
representations,
illustrating how a problem like 59+27 is equivalent to the more easily solved problem 60+26.
Targeted Standards: KY.2.OA.2, KY.2.NBT.5
