Two-Digit Addition: Counting On and Partial Sums

The use of a groupable place-value manipulative such as bundles and sticks supports students’
developing
understanding of place value and addition strategies. In this video, we demonstrate how students
can add
by counting on with tens and ones or by using partial sums to add the tens, add the ones, and
then find
the total. The video highlights how hands-on materials help students see and add tens as a
group, combine
ones, and rebundle when they make a new group of ten. Through these examples, students connect
concrete
representations to strategies for adding two-digit numbers.
