Multiplication: Understanding the Doubling and Halving Strategy
By Cindy Aossey (KCM) & Funda Gonulates
When students use the “Doubling and Halving” strategy, they transform a multiplication expression by
halving one factor and doubling the other factor, creating an equivalent expression that is easier
to solve. In this video, we explore this strategy across several examples, using arrays and area
models to illustrate why this strategy works, and discuss in what situations this strategy can be
most effectively used.
