Multiplication: A Range of Strategies for Solving 5×18

By Cindy Aossey (KCM) and Funda Gonulates (NKU)

a Spotlight post Understanding that multiplication can be solved through a range of flexible strategies empowers students to approach problems in ways that make sense to them. In this video, we explore multiple strategies for solving 5×18, including breaking apart one of the factors into addends, compensation, and doubling and halving. By decomposing 18 into “friendly” numbers, students can break down the problem into simpler, more manageable parts. These strategies are demonstrated on grid paper, in an open area model, and through symbolic notation. Using a variety of representations such as these will help students see both how and why each method works.
