Using the Rekenrek: Meet Me in the Middle
By Julie Adams (KCM)
Exploring a variety of ways to build a number develops students' early number sense. In this video, we introduce the instructional routine
“Meet Me in the Middle” as part of our collection of rekenrek activities. In this routine, two students (or a teacher and student) work collaboratively
to build a target number within five: one student moves a certain number of beads, and the other adds more beads to reach the target number. This routine
is effective in helping students explore different compositions and decompositions of numbers, while also supporting the development of subitizing skills.
Targeted Standards: KY.K.OA.5
