Introducing the Rekenrek

By Cindy Aossey (KCM) & Funda Gonulates (NKU)

a Spotlight post Students need experiences with a variety of tools to internalize the structure and relationships between numbers. The Rekenrek (also known as a bead rack, math rack, or number rack) is a tool that provides a linear structure for students to count, build, compare, and operate with numbers. It is organized with two colors, which brings attention to both fives and tens patterns. This tool can be used for a variety of purposes including early counting, place value, addition and subtraction strategy instruction, and multiplication. In this video we introduce the basic structure and features of a Rekenrek.
