Linear Measurement: Creating and Using an Inch-Worm Ruler

By Cindy Aossey (KCM) & Bethany Neel

a Spotlight post After students have experience with measuring lengths using non-standard units, students can begin to work with standard units to measure length. In this video, we start by measuring with paper “inch-worms”, each of which is a standard one-inch length. We then show how students can glue paper inch-worms to a paper strip to create, and then number, a ruler. Experiences like this help prepare students to measure with standard rulers.

Targeted Standards: KY.1.MD.2, KY.2.MD.1, KY.2.MD.9b
