Introducing the 100 Bead String

Spotlight icon Students need experiences with a variety of tools to internalize the structure of the base ten system. The 100 bead string has a linear tens and ones structure that allows students to build and compare two-digit numbers. The bead string encourages students to reason about numbers in relation to multiples of 10, and lays a foundation for rounding and for representing numbers on a number line.
