Early Subtraction Strategies witin 100: Bead String
By Cindy Aossey (KCM) & Funda Gonulates (NKU)
Students begin to build an understanding of subtracting a single-digit number from a double-digit
number by using tools such as bead strings that make the place-value structure of numbers visible.
In this video, we walk through a progression of subtraction prompts that help students see numbers
in relation to tens. We also show how a teacher might record students’ thinking on a number line and
a recording sheet to connect concrete experiences to more abstract representations. The progression
includes carefully crafted examples, such as 34 – ? = 30, and moves toward more complex problems
like 32 – 6, supporting students in developing efficient mental strategies and a strong
understanding of place value.
