Early Addition Strategies within 100: Mini Ten Frames
By Cindy Aossey (KCM) & Funda Gonulates (NKU)
Students begin to develop efficient strategies for adding a two-digit and a one-digit number by
using tools such as mini ten frames that make the place-value structure of numbers visible. In this
video, we walk through a progression of prompts to help students see how many more are needed to
reach the next ten. We also show examples of how a teacher might record students' thinking
symbolically to connect their concrete representations to mental strategies. The video culminates
with addition problems that cross a multiple of a ten, highlighting how tens frames support students
in building a foundation for fluent mental addition.
