Two-Digit Subtraction: Compensation Strategy
By Cindy Aossey (KCM) & Funda Gonulates (NKU)
Students need a variety of strategies to subtract two-digit numbers. In this video, we explore the
Compensation strategy. We demonstrate this approach by using concrete, semiconcrete. and abstract
representations. For a problem such as 43−19, a student could solve 43-20 and then add one back
from the result to compensate for the adjustment.
