Interpretations of Division
By Cindy Aossey (KCM) & Funda Gonulates (NKU)
In this video, we explore dividing a two-digit number by a one-digit number through two
interpretations of division: fair shares (partitive) and measurement (quotitive).
Using contextual problems and concrete representations, we illustrate how each interpretation leads to different
actions when solving division problems. We also use area models to highlight the structure of the
quantities and draw on the relationship between multiplication and division. Throughout the video,
we connect concrete, semi-concrete, and abstract representations to support students’ sense-making
of division situations.
