Flexibly Decomposing Numbers into Base-Ten Units
By Cindy Aossey (KCM) & Funda Gonulates (NKU)
Building and representing numbers in different ways with base ten materials provides a foundation
for students to operate on numbers flexibly. In this video, we demonstrate a few different ways
students might use base ten blocks to represent and record 234 by using the relationship between
the units, rods, and flats. Being able to flexibly decompose numbers in a variety of ways opens
up many opportunities for flexible thinking as students begin to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
