Rational Numbers: Dividing a Whole Number by a Unit Fraction

a Spotlight post Students can build on their understanding of whole number division to make sense of, and solve, division situations involving a unit fraction. In this video, we use a measurement interpretation of division to explore problems such as 3 ÷ 16, asking the question “How many one-sixth sized pieces are in three wholes?” and use pattern blocks to represent and count quantities. We connect this concrete representation to symbolic reasoning, showing that dividing by a unit fraction is equivalent to multiplying by its reciprocal. Using number lines and area models, we support students in moving between concrete, semi-concrete, and symbolic representations. Through multiple examples and repeated reasoning, students begin to notice patterns and make generalizations that prepare them for more complex division problems.
