Rational Numbers: Dividing a Unit Fraction by a Whole Number

a Spotlight post Students can build on their understanding of whole number division to make sense of, and solve, division situations involving fractions. In this video, we explore division of a unit fraction by a whole number using pattern blocks, area models, and number lines, along with symbolic reasoning to build meaningful understanding of division situations. We connect these problems to whole number reasoning and use a fair-share perspective to interpret division, such as understanding 12 รท 3, as sharing one half into three equal parts. The central idea is defining the parts in relation to the whole, helping students make sense of what is being divided and how it is being partitioned.
