Lesson Description

Materials:

• The book Is There Room on the Bus? by Helen Piers, Is There Room on the Bus? worksheet
  

1. Launching the lesson

1. Read the story Is There Room on the Bus?
   
2. Ask the class if they can think of any ways to relate this story to the Math we have been doing the past couple of days.
   
3. Remind the students what they have learned in past couple of days about fractions, decimals, and percents. Talk about the ways you move from one to another.
   

2. Developing the Lesson

1. Pose the questions on the worksheets and give the students time to work on them.
   
2. Float around the room and help when needed.
   
3. Let the students work with the other students in their groups. If they are having difficulties refers them to the worksheets we worked on yesterday.
   
4. After the students are done let them share the problems they made up with the class.
   
5. Check the problems as a class using the overhead.
   

3. Closure/Discussion/Elaboration

1. Talk about when and where we see fractions, decimals, and percents in the real world.
   
2. Discuss why it is important to understand this concept.
