LESSON Description

Materials

• The Foot Book, by Dr. Seuss. Each student will need a copy of the book, or a copy of the text, written in poem form (see attachment).
  

1. Launching the Lesson (engage):

1. Our team celebrates Dr. Seuss’ birthday each year, and find that 6th grade middle school students continue to enjoy Dr. Seuss.
   

2. Developing the Lesson:

1. Read The Foot Book, by Dr. Seuss. (I like to ham it up! I usually borrow my daughter’s "Cat in the Hat" slippers and hat to wear while I read.)
   

3) Closure/Discussion/Elaboration:

1. Present each student with a printed copy of the text of the book (see attachment).
   

1. Present/discuss the following topics:
   How many inches in a foot?
   
2. How long is your foot, measured in inches (estimated and actual)?
   
3. What is the total length of both of your feet?
   
4. How many words are in the book?
   
5. How many times does the word "foot" appear?
   
6. What percent of the words in the book is "foot"?
   
7. What is the ratio of the word "foot" to the total words?
   
8. How many times does the word "feet" appear in the book?
   
9. What is the ratio of "feet" to total words?
   
10. What is the ratio of "foot" to "feet"?
    
11. If each "foot" has 4 toes, how many toes are there?
    
12. There are 27 pages in the book. What is the average number of times the word "foot" appears on each page?
    
13. Have students write a story problem pertaining to the book. Have them include their solution and strategy.
