Using the Rekenrek: Build It, Break It
By Julie Adams (KCM)
Through the use of color and position, the rekenrek encourages students to notice, and make use of, number structures. In this video, we describe a
routine called “Build It, Break It,” where the teacher poses addition and subtraction problems within 20, then prompts students to build it on a
two-row rekenrek, solve it, and explain how they know. Students are encouraged to use number structures and relationships such as the 5+ structure
of numbers within ten, 10+ structure of teen numbers, combinations of ten, and doubles, to develop fluent addition and subtraction strategies within 20.
